The Vampyre, a Tale The Vampyre is a short story by John William Polidori. It is based on a fragment written by Lord Byron in 1816 during a gathering of author friends who, trapped inside due to bad weather, decided to write ghost stories. At the request of a friend, Polidori wrote a complete story from the premise outlined in Byron's fragment. Without either author's prior knowledge, the story was published in the April 1819 issue of New Monthly Magazine as "The Vampyre A Tale by Lord Byron"; despite immediate protests from both Byron and Polidori, the attribution stuck, for a well-known author such as Byron attracted a much better audience.

The Vampyre A Tale John William Polidori Jesse Felton 9781542661638 Books

Written at the same gathering at which Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, Polidori’s “The Vampyre” is a short story of convoluted but beautiful sentences, mostly narrative, that condense what could easily be a novel, and it ends in tragedy and loss.  Filming it would be superb, if Kubrick were alive. It is eventful, with twists and turns, and scenes and people are well-drawn. If you like old-fashioned intelligent prose, this is some of the best. / Gene Stewart

Good
The book was very interesting and enjoyable to read. I would recommend it to anyone who loves reading stories about vampires.
If you like classic books about vampires this is a must read. I enjoyed this book very much. It is a short story that has an unusual ending.
Not one of my favorites, but a classic anyway. A curiosity for vampire fans and gothic enthusiasts.
Great little short story that started the vampire obsession. The Original Vampire before Count Dracula entered stage left. It is fun to read the original version and to see how the vampire craze has evolved. Very similar to common versions. The language is a little dated but that is part of the fun..
Quite the period piece, this. Polidori was a devoted admirer of Byron, rumored to be romantically besotted. I had heard that the vampyre was modeled on Byron.

Yet, after the main body of the story, we get a testimonial about Byron's generosity and kindness when he thought no one was looking. We may never know the truth.

A decent old story though, with, with many elements later expanded on by Bram Stoker.
If you're a Dracula fan, this is a worthwhile and quick read -- offering background into the stories that shaped Bram Stoker's later writings. While the writing is quite dated and convoluted (long sentences that can be hard to follow, with vocabulary from centuries ago) -- suspense does build as the main character, Aubrey, slowly comes to recognize the horrible secret his companion is hiding.
